“Sanctuary” (prototype) – RAW 4/52

This is my Ring of the Week for Week 4.

The ring is represented by the barbed wire encircling the encaustic painting.

This month I have been working on a piece for the Memphis Child Advocacy Center’s Works of Heart, an annual auction benefiting the children served by this organization, who are victims of sexual and severe physical abuse.

This painting is the prototype for the Works of Heart auction piece.

You can purchase the above painting in my Etsy shop by clicking here.

Because this is a cause that is near and dear to my heart, I am donating 40% of the sale of this painting to the Memphis Child Advocacy Center.

“Helping victims become children again. That’s why we’re here.
The mission of the Memphis Child Advocacy Center is to serve children who are victims of sexual and severe physical abuse through prevention, education and intervention.”

This 5″ X 5″  prototype for the Works of Heart auction piece came about because I was working with so many materials that I knew I could learn from making a prototype.  This was very helpful in learning how not to mess up and how to do things in a better way!  It also helped me work through the concept and meaning behind this piece.  It was definitely a cathartic and meaningful process.

Things I learned by making a prototype:

  • The right amount of base wax is important when you are adding heavy paper elements such as the Gerber daisies in the foreground.  More coats went on the 8′ X 8″ final painting prior to adding the paper.
  • It had been a while since I had worked with encaustic and I learned (again) how important it is to get a smooth even surface of wax in the beginning, otherwise it is a struggle throughout.
  • The barbed wire was a challenge because is was quite rusty and bending it sprinkled the painting with an orange powder.  In the final painting I covered it with a clean soft cloth before winding on the barbed wire ring in order to protect the surface.

Works of Heart piece was blogged about here:
